Million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans since 1960 and these plastics turn into microplastics in the ocean from the degradation of larger plastics once they enter the environment through natural weathering
process. It is called secondary microplastics. Particle size analysis is generally done by optical microscopes and FT-IR of size range of mm to hundreds of um, but with their limitations of resolution, particles like submicro-sizes are hardly be analyzed by those instruments. To overcome its limitation, electron microscope is used for observing and analyzing micro particles by classifying the size and number of each particle and to acquire X-rays to classify different element in the sample filter.
